I won’t copy the entire article, but here are some relevant quotes:

FANS of one of the greatest sitcoms in history, you finally have cause to rejoice: Chuckles the Clown is, once again, going to bite the dust, and this time he’s doing it on DVD.

What knocked the series off the rapid track, according to Steven Feldstein, senior vice president for corporate and marketing communications at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, was a glutted marketplace. “We looked at the landscape of the TV-to-DVD business and stepped relieve,” he said. “The other studios were dumping stuff that nobody wanted onto DVD. I mean, `What you talkin’ ’bout, Willis? ‘ Arrive on. People were dumping everything.”

This May [Oprah Winfrey] devoted an hour of her present to a reunion of the entire surviving novel cast, complete with a replica of the WJM region. During the display Ms. Winfrey wept with joy.

Fox got the message and has now committed to releasing all three remaining seasons, covering episodes from the topple of 1974 to the spring of 1977.

1981 was The Year of the Werewolves…the furry fiends leaped onto movie screens in three major films: “The Howling,” “Wolfen,” and the classic of the genre, “An American Werewolf in London.” There has never been a greater werewolf film, there has never been a better transformation scene, and few alarm movies can match the enchanting mixture of humor and scares that writer/direction John Landis (”Animal House,” “The Blues Brothers”) achieved here.

Although there had been humor in panic films before this movie, “An American Werewolf in London” showed once and for all that having comedy in a terror film didn’t mean that the film would lose out in the alarm department. Landis makes it definite that the film is NOT a comedy — the apprehension scenes are carried with dead-seriousness and homely impact — but there is so distinguished quirky humor surrounding these scenes that the film becomes incredibly likable and buoyant. Most of the laughs advance from seeing the ragged movie werewolf premise dropped into the unique day and watching the characters try to deal with it.

Actors Griffin Dunne and David Naughton, neither of whom had been in a movie before, develop a fantastic ‘ordinary guy’ feeling to their characters of two young American boys backpacking through Europe. In rural England, they have a contemptible encounter with a legendary monster, and Naughton faces the consequences of being bitten when he returns to London and takes up living with a ravishing nurse (Jenny Agutter) .

The transformation scene is justly noted and a milestone in visual effects. Make-up wizard Rick Baker lets the viewers witness a real-time twisting of a human body into a wolf shape: limbs stretch, snouts pop, hair grows, the body contorts…it’s incredible to perceive. (And on DVD, you can peer it over and over and over again) . Even computer graphics can’t conclude an execute as startling as this one.

This DVD offers some nice extras. The image is pleasant, and the 5.1 Surround Sound is decent (although there’s not a lot of encourage speaker sound) . Actors Naughton and Dunne do feature commentary on the film, and provide some curious information and sound as if they were having a ample time reliving the experience. I wish that Landis had been on the commentary as well, but you can hear his thoughts on the film in an 18-minute interview. Landis is an absolute hoot to listen to; the guy is as laughable as his movie, and he absolutely bursts with ideas and observations. To go along with the Landis interview is an 11-minute interview with make-up maestro Rick Baker. He provides a intelligent sight at crafting what he calls “the coolest werewolf film ever made.” Also included is a vintage featurette on the making of the film, although it’s only about five minutes long (but you bag more of wise-cracking John Landis), ten minutes of archival footage of Baker making a cast of David Naughton’s hand, and an assortment of storyboards, outtakes, and production photos.

“An American Werewolf in London” is a major turning point in anxiety films and visual effects — and even over twenty years later, it is smooth one of the most intriguing movies of its decade. It hasn’t passe at all, and this DVD lets you experience it the plan it should be seen (and in the company of wild-man John Landis!)

This is one of the few movies that have consistently given me nightmares since I was a child. It is at least a decade ahead of its time. Most of the negative criticisms that I have read expend the word “uneven” a lot. Even Roger Ebert, whom I love, claimed that the humor and the scare were an uneasy mix. This was years before he gave the movie Roar a definite review. Now I LIKE the movie Bawl, but there is no map that one can claim that it gets the balance proper whereas Werewolf gets it substandard. Sob simply benefits from occurring in the cynical nineties – Werewolf suffers from being avant guard. .

The current DVD has a few worthy extras on it – especially a unique interview with Landis. Even after all these years, the film peaceful holds up. Unlike most films, I witness more things in it the more I survey. What, for instance, is up with the townsfolk of East Proctor and what is their relationship with the modern werewolf? My guess – they brought it on themselves somehow. Maybe one of their gain ran over a gypsy and was cursed. Instead of killing the bloke, they all settle to cloak beneath the pentangle in The Slaughtered Lamb every chubby moon.

I am recently returned from England and this movie is listed in Fodor’s as one of the films that best showcases London. I heartily agree. I visited the depraved tube close at Tottenham Court Road and it mild looks considerable the same as when the David made his ruin there. And as I walked, alone in the countryside, beneath the light of the corpulent moon, I had to ask myself, “Am I crazy? ” Fortunately, I made it to the pub. There I waited, beneath the pentangle, for my friends to perambulate me home.

I cannot beget that IMAGE has released an edited print of Abel Ferrara’s gigantic early exploitation flick, MS. 45. What is deplorable with them? This 1981 movie about a very unnerved Manhattan woman who gets raped and abused and eventually fights assist was originally released with an R rating and the venerable VHS release from USA Video was the uncut R rated version as well. So why is the novel IMAGE version edited? Not only are both of the rape scenes come the commence of the film edited, but the climactic shooting confrontation scene at the extinguish of the movie is also slice. IMAGE calls this the “R-rated” version, but it clearly IS NOT. They should be ashamed to release such a travesty. This DVD has NO EXTRAS (not even a trailer) and it’s not even the complete movie! Why even bother? Once again, IMAGE proves that they have no plan what the DVD audience is looking for. Another expansive “F” in my book.

I saw Ms. 45 a few months ago and was completely blown away by it. I understand it’s been edited, and I prefer I saw a version that had been sever. But I can affirm you that it’s detached worth seeing.

Thana is a peaceful seamstress who is sexually assaulted not once, but twice, on her arrangement home from work. When I read the description, I understanding this sounded a bit overly dramatic and far-fetched. However, the intention it plays out in the film is very believable, both in the contrivance it is portrayed, and the device it effects Thana in the rest of the film.

Thana is walking home and gets attacked and raped in an alleyway. While we can detached eye feel first-rate sympathy for Thana as the victim, we can also peruse how truly pathetic the rapist is, in his desperate need to have power over another person. Zoe Tamerlis does not squawk, since her character is peaceful, but suggests more than enough with her facial expressions. Thana is in shock, and returns home to pull herself together. Once she gets to her apartment, she sits down on her bed, and the first thing she sees on the floor is a foreign pair of boots. Another rapist has entered her apartment. She has already been violated on the street where she is vulnerable, and before she is able to recover from the initial shock, she is violated further in her apartment, her fill site.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ms. 45! Click Here

Thana manages to destroy the second rapist in her home, and takes his gun with her when she goes out the next day. She disposes of his body by cutting off a part at a time and dumping it. As the corpse gradually disappears, so does Thana’s composure. She begins to exercise the gun to ruin men, first retaliating when she feels threatened, then going out in search of them, using herself as bait.

“Ms. 45″ isn’t so mighty of a feminist revenge fantasy as it is a feminist portrait of a victim turned anti-hero. In one scene, Thana walks through a park, and a group of men encircle her with the definite design of gang raping her. She surprises them by turning 360 degrees and killing them one by one. However, there are a few instances in which the intentions of the men she kills are not so certain, and she seems to be killing innocent men as well as would-be rapists. The point of this is not to say that what Thana is doing is legal and impartial, but to exhibit the effects of sexual assault on the female victim. Women and girls who are sexually assaulted and abused by males often feel threatened by all men. This movie illustrates how sexual assault effects how female victims thought men and interact with them.

The reason why I call this a feminist film is not because it glorifies her actions of revenge, but because it follows the memoir of the female victim from beginning to extinguish. In most slasher movies, we usually look one or more women who are killed for voyeuristic purposes, which many feminist film theorists reflect mysoginistic. The female victim looks comely, and keeps the audience entertained by dying a violent death before she is ever developed as an right character. In “Ms. 45,” the male attackers themselves are the ones who never become further developed, and Thana is the one we follow, the one we care about.

Zoe Tamerlis is perfect as the still Thana. Although she never speaks, her face shows the slow transformation from frightened violet to femme fatale killing machine. Portraying Thana as a still is a vivid recede on portion of Abel Ferrera. Rape is the most underreported crime, and Thana’s inability to assert symbolizes perfectly a sexual assault victim’s inability to deny what happened to her.

“Ms. 45″ is considered an exploitation movie. If it is, it’s the one of the finest, most valid, and most sensitive exploitation movies I’ve ever seen. Feminist exploitation cinema, honest like the Jack Hill classic, “Switchblade Sisters.”

Set in London in the early 1970s, THE BANK JOB is based on genuine life events. A group of would be criminals is spot up by MI5 (or 6, no one can withhold them straight) to remove a bank and find compromising photos of a royal personage. Unfortunately for our gang, not only were the photos in demand (which were the “property” of contaminated revolutionary Michael X) kept in a excellent deposit box at this bank, but so were the secrets and lies of many illustrious and obnoxious people, including the payola ledgers of a porn kingpin and the photo files of a well-placed local madam. Everybody who was anybody, from the cops on the beat up to the Lords of the Realm, was implicated in some scandal by the evidence from this well-known bank robbery.

THE BANK JOB is a fun, entertaining, tension-filled romp. These amateur crooks procure more breaks and have more halt calls than you would imagine possible. While the film does slightly bog down on occasion, for the most piece the pacing builds unbiased the proper amount of suspense with these twists and turns of fate. In several places, my heart was actually racing. By the ruin, our villains are the heroes, and everyone gets what they truly deserve.

I really liked the cinematography of this film. THE BANK JOB actually looks like it was filmed in the 1970s. At one point, I double-checked with my husband to confirm that it was a fresh movie. The attain archaic is very convincing, producing a very authentic stare. The ensemble cast was quite beneficial, performing as a cohesive unit, but no individual really standing out.

THE BANK JOB is a gargantuan movie for an titillating evening at home. My husband and I really had a lot of fun. And we got to learn a cramped history from the 1970s as well.

I wasn’t really enthusiastic in The Bank Job until I caught Ebert and Roeper on the tube and heard mucho praise from Richard Roeper, as well as, the guest critic at the time. I wouldn’t attach this on my top ten of the year list, but it was suspenseful and downright engaging from initiate to do. I’m not the biggest Jason Statham fan, mainly because he always looks and sounds the same in every role, but here he shows a slight more range and is quite likeable. Overall, this is a noble rental that got overlooked by many during it’s theatrical urge.

Jane Seymour is admirable as the tough, cold aunt. Normally a alluring beauty, Seymour lets herself be apparent as an earlier woman, her face asperous by nature. The 1993 version of Nicholas Nickleby should not be considered. It is not merely the snake-faced appearance of the actor who plays the lead, nor the fact that he speaks as though he has a dreadful frigid with a stuffed-up nose. But he is also a contemporary character, not a nineteenth-century character. And that’s honest for starters.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Nicholas Nickleby! Click Here

The 2002 version is not dreadful. With widescreen and surround sound and pleasant photography, this is a proper production for what appears to be a little budget. Problems launch with the casting. The American actor who plays the lead speaks in a carefully articulated generic English accent, but that won’t do, nor the fact that his manner and mannerisms are those of a contemporary rather than a period character. Christopher Plummer is an accomplished actor, but his trouble here seems half-hearted, as though he didn’t consider worthy of this production. The actor who plays Smike mumbles his lines as though he is bucking for the role of Hamlet. The sage is distinguished enough that this movie is not a washout, but none of it is particularly well done.

What the above versions lack is comedy. Dickens was fond of mixing hilarious comedy with the most heart-rending drama, and Nicholas Nickleby is no exception. The above versions are merely drama. But the biggest crime is in the character of Mrs. Nickleby. Mrs. Nickleby is one of the substantial silly characters of world literature. Unfortunately, she is also politically wrong. The above versions simply throw out her character and replace it with a blah nonentity.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Nicholas Nickleby! Click Here

The 1977 version. At over 5 hours, this version brings in more of the minor characters of this long account and treats the chronicle according to the book. As often with the BBC, there is lavish attention to sets and their accuracy and tiny attention to anything else. The music is nonexistent. The photography is not dreadful indoors but the few outdoor scenes are overexposed. And the acting is marginal at best. Nigel Havers is remarkable too frail for the role of Nicholas but does an adequate job. The ending is satisfying. All in all, well worth seeing, especially for readers of the book. The emphasis is on drama. There is humor in the character of Mrs. Nickleby and an attempt at humor in a couple of the minor characters.

The 1947 version was made before the Dhimmist ideology came to dominate movie-making, and here we get Mrs. Nickleby in all her mind-boggling glory. In fact, all of the characters in this movie have that Dickensian edge that makes them larger, or at least more effective, than life. Excellent scripting and respectable direction develop for a hard-hitting, heart-touching and occasionally side-splitting experience. The actors and actresses don’t TRY to drawl in an upper-middle-class British accent; they simply sing and behave as they normally would and it is proper to the period. The dawdle is quick, and the script had to streamline some of the events, but all of the major events are here and are effectively presented. The ending is far more dramatic than in the other versions.

I have viewed four versions of this Dickens classic and bag the BBC region starring Havers to be the most consistantly satisfying. The oldest version is processed from a print too damaged to beget a well-behaved result from the audio or visual standpoint. The stage version by the Royal Shakespeare group has many fantastic things about it but I miss the visual images of the architecure and countryside which are so mighty a fragment of the author’s world. The fresh version staring Dallimore is short on Dickensian humor and the heavy handed music obtain does too powerful to sink the performance.

Unlike another reviewer, I do not catch Havers too frail for the role of Nicholas. He is supposed to be 19 and many 19 year olds view remarkable older than Nigel does. The best things about this BBC version are the unbelievable views of the countryside and the inspect of the houses and towns.

The music is minimal but with Dicken’s contant scene shifts I don’t acquire that I miss it. The actors are fair to the reputation of British television actors. Mostly trained on the stage, they are dependably fantastic. One might determine other actors in other versions as being one’s favorites for this or that role, but overall this seems to be the choice for a reliable basic rendering of this classic.

The clarity gave a decent showing – even with the amount of skin tones being shown by our valorous leader in that beginning Russian spa scene. The color was intelligent, maybe too powerful so once they hit the snow with the flesh tones and groundless injuries contrasting against the white. But the credit (pink colors) looked certain with no grain at all, and admittedly that DNR thingy (or whatever they call the removal process for some of these upgrades) did not blur/fuzz things at all. The Chicago street scenes looked apt and the background signs are actually readable now. The DTS is mostly channeled to the front three, but they managed to add some decent bass here and there.

The supplements are from the 2004 edition in indecent def, but it is always nice to ogle that stunt man memorial featurette, recommend that if you prefer only one to peruse. The included TV spots and such are always nice for a before and after comparison on quality. For what they save into this, and the effect being offered I feel you won’t be disappointed.

This is a really fun, fun movie. It’s not the beat all of science fiction as it was hyped when it was released, but it certainly is a noble combination high adventure, status comedy, cyberpunk, and Bruce Willis gun fighting action. Doesn’t perform sense? Don’t pain. I’ll interpret.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Fifth Element! Click Here

High adventure comes from the plot: effect the earth from cross by finding some mystic items and a perfect human before the appointed zero hour. That powerful is sure. Cyberpunk explains in a scheme the setting of the futuristic urban scenes, which are fantastically portrayed in this movie. All of the settings and technology were impressive as well as stylish. The special effects were well above average and in many scenes very impressive, but a state comedy? You got it. I won’t acquire into the details. I will say there are quite a few scenes that involve the kind of subplots you salvage in sitcoms. This is a agreeable thing by the scheme. A lesser movie would mess this up. Director Luc Besson made all of these elements (no pun intended) fit seamlessly.

Acting is expansive. Despite common conception of models not being very suitable actors the models that acted in this film did a salubrious job of being campy in an enthralling blueprint without hamming it up. I can go on an on about each of the reas actors and how they succeeded in pulling off whatever character, but I will digress to two ends of the spectrum. Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod is priceless and worth the sign of admission alone. One exception I would have to say is Tommy “Puny” Lister as the President. Up until the final scenes his acting was stunning dry. I also have to criticize whoever decided to hype up the fact the movie has Luke Perry in it, who played Billy. Billy did nothing to carry the set and only had a cameo role in the beginning. Ugh… Hollywood.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Fifth Element! Click Here

The movie can salvage too trendy. The music, though nice, didn’t really fit the setting. The very last scene is totally lame and if you ask me unlikely (sorry Korby…) . And there is a scene or two that was fair trying too hard to be hip. I can forgive all that because the comedy, action and drama do fit in to what ends up being a mirthful romp in high flying action.

Sony dropped the ball on their first blu-ray release of The Fifth Element. The uncompressed PCM and Dolby 5.1 surround tracks blew you away, but the video quality was merely on par with regular DVD resolution. This time Sony listened to their fans and remastered the movie so that you score the chunky 1080p savor you deserved the last time. Bought the first blu-ray? No scrape. Sony seems to be offering an exchange program. Unbiased contact Sony and they will spot up a procedure you can pass your passe blu-ray for the remastered one. Contact info is below:

One downside though: no extras. That’s correct. All the chilly stuff in the ultimate edition is gone. Getting this DVD is objective like getting the first one they released. You pick up only the movie and some trivia text. If I were you I would aloof wait until they create some kind of special edition in blu-ray so you regain the higher resolution AND the goodies.

If you want to experience a varied range of edifying emotions without taking any one of them too seriously then you’re going to adore The Fifth Element. If you want high definition and special features then you better wait. I am betting this is going to be the case with most (if not all) unusual HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVDs that first near out.

The account goes that director Luc Besson began writing THE FIFTH ELEMENT in his teens, incorporating all the Sci-Fi elements he loved into one over-the-top, spacious set opera…sort of an “E.E. ‘Doc’ Smith ‘Skylark’ Meets Flash Gordon and Barbarella” hybrid with sex, intergalactic action, and even some pseudo-religious overtones tossed in…in other words, a teenage daydream near correct! Critics panned the raze result for this very reason, sneering at Bruce Willis’ Earth-saving (yet again!) Korben Dallas, and Besson’s then-girlfriend, clothing-optional Milla Jovovich, as the innocent demigod, Leeloo.

The critics were unsuitable!

THE FIFTH ELEMENT is, in the best sense of the word, a classic ‘B’ movie, a residence opera where a prologue vaguely similar to STARGATE leads to a future Earth where traffic jams occur thirty stories above the ground, humanity is ruled by rotund ‘Tiny’ Lister Jr., and where the Ultimate Inappropriate is served by everyone’s common villain, Gary Oldman, sporting a Southern accent! If this DOESN’T convince you that this is a ‘popcorn’ flick, not to be taken too seriously, there is Chris Tucker, sporting a blond hairdo, as the Galaxy’s current media personality, promoting himself as he hits on his adoring female fans; Ian Holm, as the monk who knows ‘the Secret’, forced, despite himself, to become an active participant in the adventure; and some of the most … frightful alien mercenaries you’ll ever notice, terrorizing a station resort, until they meet their match in Bruce Willis’ ‘DIE HARD in Space’ protagonist! Yippee-Ki-Yay, indeed!

The FX are extraordinary, the comedy, immense and sly, the heroics, macho, and as Leeloo, sent to effect Earth, Jovovich manages to be both naive and sexy, with broken English and a gymnast’s grace.

Bruce Willis is a joy, as always, to study, and he carries the film with charm and self-depreciating humor, whether dealing with endless phone calls from his mother, driving his sky taxi recklessly (cabbies change very shrimp in the future!), taking on terrorists single-handed, or falling for the exotic Leeloo. When he blows away a roomful of hostage-holding aliens, then asks, “Does anyone else want to negotiate? “, you KNOW Besson picked the good guy for the lead!

If you want Profound Science Fiction, glance 2001: A Place ODYSSEY again…but if you want to kick assist and honest have fun, inspect no further…THE FIFTH ELEMENT delivers!

“Singin’ In the Rain” has finally gotten the “special” treatment this masterpiece deserves. The modern digital transfer is stunning– both visual and audio. I’ve seen this film I don’t know how many times in theatres, including several screenings in the new 3-strip Technicolor. This transfer, as with “The Wizard of OZ,” is as cessation as you can catch to seeing a 3-strip print in a theatre.

Many reviewers have complained about the commentary track and it is the low-point of this edition. So skip it, if you don’t like it.

Instead, throw on the second disc, which is a goldmine. First, there is the beneficial PBS documentary on the Arthur Freed Unit, “Musicals Pleasing Musicals.” This is an often revealing 90-minute film about the musical films Freed produced. Plenty of stout excerpts, too. It tends to puffery, but not excessively.

Then there is a original documentary, “What A Delicate Feeling,” on the making of “Singin’ In the Rain.” Watching both these documentaries, you don’t need the commentary track. Most of it was lifted from these documentaries.

In addition, this supplementary disc includes the songs customary in “Singin’ In the Rain,” as they first appeared in their new written for films and later films that frail the songs again. Some of these are unintenionally humorous today. But it is really a break course in the history of movie musicals. My accepted is Eleanor Powell in the number that introduced “You Are My Lucky Star.” A beautfully done, very ’30’s black-and-white number that builds into an all stops-out dream-dance sequence. (Were Americans ever this innocent? ) Others include Bing Crosby astounding introducing “Radiant Girls,” Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney introducing “Well-behaved Morning,” Cliff Edwards (aka Ukele Ike, Jiminy Crickett) introducing “Singin’ In the Rain” with what appears to be every star then under-contract to M-G-M in 1929, “Broadway Melody” in a immense number led by the irreplaceable Eleanor Powell and succor from some of the best talent of the time including “eccentric dancer” Buddy Ebsen and the substantial singer Frances Langford–the best number by far in this retrospective. And there is another whole part of audio excerpts from the recording sessions.

In short, this is an improbable collection that any musical or film buff should esteem.

It is just, as one reviewer eminent, that the “Broadway Melody” number in “Singin’ In the Rain” is a flaw in the slouch of the film. Pauline Kael pointed this out too. She considers the film a huge one. For myself, I don’t mind, the number is too damned well-conceived and curious. Again, thanks to being on DVD, you can jump to the next scene if you don’t care to peruse it. I’ve tried it and the film definitely runs smoother narratively. But I missed it, and played after the film.

If you worship SITR, as I do, this is a must seize. If you’re alive to and have never seen it, rent it and resolve for yourself.

Let’s hope that Warner Brothers does a 50th anniversary edition of “Bandwagon” next year with a digital and audio refining that equals or surpasses this. And a better commentary track. Bet Scorssee would join in the commentary.

ONE LAST THING

“Singin’ In the Rain” was not shot in widescreen, but in the only format faded for studio pictures before the ruin of 1953. It was designed to be shown in 1.37:1, Which objective about the ratio of most tv screens. YOU ARE NOT MISSING ANYTHING. I wish you young film buffs would educate yourselves about the history of film aspect ratios.

Also Michael Kidd had nothing whatsoever to do with the choregraphy in “Singin’ In the Rain.” He comments on it, but never claims he did any of it, for the simple reason he did none. He was probably in Current York over-seeing his legendary choregraphy for the unique stage production of “Guys and Dolls.” Which is probably why he got the “Bandwagon” assignment a year after “Singin’ In the Rain.” He did all the choregraphy in “Bandwagon” and the following year, 1954, for “7 Brides For 7 Brothers.”

Kelly and Donen worked in partnership on the choregraphy and direction “SITR.” And it is really impossible now to settle who was responsible for what.

SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN’s narrative is well known, and concerns 1920s mute romantic acting team Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen.) Anguish is that sound is coming in–and Lina’s speaking jabber could peel paint off the wall. The solution? Don’s best friend (Donald O’Connor) and esteem interest (Debbie Reynolds) have the inspiration of revamping Lockwood and Lamont’s debut sound film as a musical, with Reynolds dubbing Hagen’s vocals. The resulting narrative is a high-energy, extremely witty, and truly blooming film laced with period songs by Arthur Freed, a film that many regard as the single finest musical to emerge from Hollywood.

In many respects SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN is a throwback to the early musicals of the era it satirizes, for many of its musical numbers (’Make ‘em Laugh’ is a indispensable example) have absolutely nothing to do with the anecdote it tells–but unlike such early musicals the storyline is exceptionally strong, and since the film is about the creation of an early “all talking, all dancing, all singing” movie in which such musical numbers were typical, they have here a sure validity that could not otherwise be achieved. The cast is absolutely flawless, and without exception Kelly, Reynolds, O’Connor, and Hagen (particularly memorable as the literally unspeakable calm star) give the finest performances of their respective careers. The musical numbers range from the vibrant and complex ‘Good Morning’ to the lyrical ‘You Are My Lucky Star’ to the brilliantly conceived and executed title song, each without exception the definition of perfection. The art designs are meticulous, radiant, and recreate the late-silent and early-sound era of Hollywood with worthy wit and charm. As a whole, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN possesses an engergy and vitality that simply makes you bounce in your seat from excitement.

SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN is a musical that even people who abominate musicals treasure. Whether or not you deem it “the” finest musical ever created by Hollywood is, ultimately, a matter of personal preference; there are several contenders for that title, most notably MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, GIGI, and THE WIZARD OF OZ. But no matter where you personally cross it, SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN is certainly ONE of the best, a film that simply gains in distinguished and common stature with every passing year, a national and a world esteem of cinematic art.
